General John C. Fremont was the first republican presidential candidate in the United States and a military leader for the union forces. Lincoln had given him command over Missouri in 1861, during the civil war. He immediately declared martial law and ordered the freedom of all slaves. Lincoln, fearing that Missouri would seceed from the Union, urged General Fremont to rescind the order. After refusing to do so, Lincoln removed him from command and reinstated slavery in the state. Fremont was later accused of wanting to become a military dictator of a renegade state. Two years later Lincoln finally gave his emancipation proclamation. Fremont did what he wanted based on his own morals, regardless of the consequences.
